Have you had a chance read Cloak of Shadows yet? It is the first book in the Netherwalker Series by new author, CK Dawn. If you are a fan of urban fantasy, you will definitely enjoy this book. I was excited to have the chance for a few minutes with CK, to find out a little bit about her and how she got started as an author. We’re also offering a giveaway for some Cloak of Shadows swag and an Amazon gift card, so make sure you enter at the end of the interview.
First, CK, I’d like to thank you for taking some time out of your day to share a little bit about yourself with your readers and fans. So, let’s get started, shall we…
BFF: Do you recall how your interest in writing began?
CK: I’ve always loved to read. The magical places that authors shared came alive inside my head, almost as if I were right there in their world. Then, as I got a little older, I found myself re-imagining some stories and changing them to the way I wanted to see them play out. I just wasn’t writing them down yet. I was also writing in a journal and tried my hand at poetry, but that was just for me. It wasn’t until much later in my life that I finally put pen to paper as it were, but I guess you could say my passion for reading and writing has always been there.
BFF: What inspired you to write your first book?
CK: My sister! Hands down, she gave me the nudge I needed to start this writing journey and she inspires me still.
BFF: What, did you find, was the hardest part of writing your book?
CK: There have been quite a few difficulties and the entire experience has been a learning process, but I can recall the first obstacle as being one of the hardest to overcome.
The more I wrote and the bigger my world became, the more anxious I got. The enormity of it stood in front of me like a mountain peak that I would never reach. it seemed impossible. Then, with loving and encouraging words from my sister, I pushed through. The storm passed and I could see the trail through the trees so I took the path up the mountain step by step.
BFF: On the other side then, what did you enjoy most about writing your book?
CK: I’ve loved every part of writing the book, even the rough spots. After having a lovely dinner with friends and family toasting to the accomplishment, my favorite memory will always be sitting beside my sister and hitting the publish button.
BFF: I really like your book cover, how did you come up with the design?
CK: It was a collaboration between myself and my graphic designer. She does amazing work! http://holthaleywalker.com/
BFF: What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing it to life?
CK: So many challenges, but nothing that can’t be overcome with determination and taking things one step at a time.
BFF: While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters?
CK: I would love to be one of my characters, especially Abbey! They almost have lives of their own now, so to speak, they seem so real I even catch myself saying “Abbey wouldn’t say that.” or “That is so a Lourdie comment.”
BFF: What books/authors have influenced your writing?
CK: Growing up it was definitely Stephen King. Today I tend to seek out strong female characters from authors like Karen Marie Moning, George R R Martin, and Laurel K Hamilton. They rock!
BFF: Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
CK: Nope, I didn’t learn a thing. 😛 Just kidding. I learned so much from writing! The one big thing I learned is that I could do it. I just had to believe.
BFF: Do you have any advice for other writers?
CK: If you want to write, write! Don’t let excuses stop you. You CAN do it, just take it one step at a time. Find what or who inspires you and go for it!
BFF: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
CK: A great big THANK YOU! Without you, authors are nothing. Thank you for your interest in Cloak of Shadows, thank you for your support, and thank you for your love of reading.
BFF: Can you share a little of your current work with us?
CK: Hmm, let’s see. The prequel to The Netherwalker Series is called A Neophyte’s Journey (You’re the first to know the title) and it is all about Abbey’s past before she even knew the King’s Court existed. Book 2 is in the works, things will heat up between Lourdie and Temple, and a brand new character will be introduced, but I can’t guarantee that he’s human. (Another exclusive.)
Some exclusives, how exciting! I for one, can’t wait for A Neophyte’s Journey, I’m excited to learn about Abbey’s past and Book 2 in the series sounds like the Netherwalker Series is only going to get better. CK Dawn, it has been an absolute pleasure. Thanks again for your time!
About The Author:
CK lives with the love of her life John, his cat Scout, her cat Hagrid, their mutually adopted and socialized feral kitten Pepper (yes, cats have favorite humans. It’s a thing), and their dog Diesel (aka Methane– Please, don’t make her explain).
She credits her mother for the strong independent woman she is, her father for her inner peace and beautiful outlook on life, and the summers of sweaty, manual labor on her grandparents’ farm for her strong work ethic.
In writing, CK has truly found her bliss. Stay tuned, because there will be a lot more to come in her Netherwalker series. Seriously, things have only just begun.
